Georgia Milestone Assessment
What is Georgia Milestones Assessment?
- The Georgia Milestones Assessment System (Georgia Milestones) is a state required comprehensive assessment system spanning grades 3 through high school. Georgia Milestones measures your student’s mastery of the state standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Students in grades 3 through 8 will take End-of-Grade (EOG) assessments in English Language Arts and Mathematics, while grade 5 and 8 students will also take the EOG Social Studies assessments and grade 8 students will take a science EOG. High school students will take End-of-Course (EOC) assessments for each of the eight EOC associated courses in which they are enrolled, as designated by the State Board of Education.
What is the purpose of the Georgia Milestones Assessment?
- Georgia Milestones is designed to provide information about how well students are mastering the state adopted content standards. Georgia Milestones is designed to provide students and teachers with critical information about a students individual achievement and his/her readiness for their next level of learning—be it the next grade, the next course, or the next endeavor (college or career).
What types of questions will be on the Georgia Milestones Assessment?
Georgia Milestones is administered on-line, and it includes the item types described below:
- Open-ended (constructed-response) items - where students have to create short written responses to show what they know in English Language Arts (all grades and courses);
- A writing component - where students write an essay (in response to passages read by students) at every grade level and course within the English Language Arts assessments;
- Technology-enhanced items that are multiple step problems using interactive items on the assessment; and • multiple-choice items in all content areas and courses.
When do students take the assessment?
- For students in grades 3-8, schools will test students between the dates of April - May of each year.
- For students in grades 9-12, schools will test students in May of each year. (These dates also apply to middle school students taking high school course with a EOC.)
- The students will take different sections each day. The total time tested each day is around 2 hours.
What can I do to help my student be prepared for the test?
Students who are prepared, calm, and rested perform better on tests. Here are some of the many ways to help your student approach Georgia Milestones in a relaxed, positive way:
- Encourage your student to employ good study and test-taking skills. These skills include following directions carefully, avoiding careless errors, and reviewing work
- Explain the purpose of the tests. The assessments give students an opportunity to show what they have learned in school. They also give teachers information that helps them plan instruction.
- Point out that some items may be more difficult than others
- Be certain your student gets plenty of sleep and has a healthy breakfast and lunch. Taking tests is hard work for many students and can require a lot of energy.
- Be certain your student is at school on time. Rushing and worrying about being late could affect performance on the tests.
- Remember to ask your student about the testing at the end of each day.
- Remember to always be positive during this period and offer encouraging words.
What resources are available for my child to prepare for GMAS?
There are 2 main online resources to help you and your child become familiar yourself with the assessment content and the assessment platform:
-
Experience Online Georgia provides students with an opportunity to become familiar with the online testing platform through the Test Practice link. This practice site does not require a log-in and is available 7 days a week. http://www.gaexperienceonline.com/
-
Importantly, this practice site is not designed as a “practice test” to measure a student’s knowledge of course content and scores will not be generated. Rather, it is intended to allow students to familiarize themselves with the online platform prior to testing.
-
Georgia Milestones Study Guides are intended to serve as a resource for parents and students. They contain practice questions and learning activities for each content area. The Georgia Milestones study guides can be reached at the following website:
-
Grades 3-8: https://gadoe.org/assessment-accountability/georgia-milestones/
-
Grades 9-12: https:/https://gadoe.org/assessment-accountability/georgia-milestones/
EVALUACIONES GEORGIA MILESTONES
- Elementos de preguntas abiertas (respuesta construida): donde los estudiantes tienen que crear respuestas escritas cortas para mostrar lo que saben en Artes del Lenguaje Inglés (todos los grados y cursos);
- Un componente de escritura: donde los estudiantes escriben un ensayo (en respuesta a pasajes leídos por los estudiantes) en cada nivel de grado y curso dentro de las evaluaciones de Artes del Lenguaje Inglés;
- Grados 3º -8º : https://gadoe.org/assessment-accountability/georgia-milestones/
- Grados 9º -12º : https://www.gadoe.org/Curriculum-Instruction-andAssessment/Assessment/ Pages/EOC-Study-Resource-Guides.aspx

- On testing days, it is extra important to attend to home routines and set students up for success. Please ensure that your student gets a good night’s sleep the night before testing, arrives at school on time on the days of testing, and has a healthy and hearty breakfast on the days of testing. We want to ensure students have the energy and stamina needed for the testing period.
- Further, as a parent, you are a critical partner in ensuring that your students have a positive outlook and frame of mind about testing. As testing approaches and throughout the testing window, take extra time to encourage your student and offer words that instill confidence in their abilities and perseverance to ensure they arrive at school feeling good about themselves and have a positive outlook on the day.
- If you have any questions, we invite you to visit the district’s website and discuss the available resources with your student: https://henry.k12.ga.us/Page/151339.

Gifted Education
Gifted Program Description
The Henry County School System recognizes the need to provide gifted education services to students who have the potential for exceptional achievement. The academic instructional program in middle and high school enhances, and differentiates curriculum and instruction in academic courses incorporating standards-based instruction. These procedures establish the framework for providing gifted services under Georgia Code IDDD and Department of Education Rule 160-4-2-.38 at www.gadoe.org. The Henry County School System uses materials and procedures which are non-discriminatory with regard to race, religion, national origin, gender, disabilities or economic background in determining referral, eligibility, placement and instructional delivery for the gifted program. Assessment tools meet Georgia Department of Education standards for validity and reliability.
Instructional Philosophy
- The overall purpose in providing services for gifted students is to offer a differentiated curriculum in which the content and teaching strategies are appropriate and effective for gifted students, and expectations of student mastery allow for the extension of learning opportunities, development of individual potential, enhancement of the creativity and advancement toward becoming an independent learner.
Public Awareness
- Henry County School System provides for parents or guardians information about the gifted program, referral procedures, and eligibility requirements through the Henry County School District website at schoolwires.henry.k12.ga.us. In addition, administrators and gifted education teachers shall provide this information locally for faculty, staff, and parents.
- New students previously enrolled in a Georgia gifted program are eligible for placement as soon as their participation has been officially confirmed through a Request of Records (B-13). Students who have been in a gifted program of an accredited school may be placed when official records indicate that the student has satisfied Georgia gifted qualifying criteria.
- Students who are identified as gifted in another Georgia school/ county are granted automatic eligibility in our program. Students who are identified as gifted in another state are not granted automatic eligibility in Georgia. There is no mandated reciprocity between states; however, the school system should immediately take steps to see that the advanced learning needs of the student are met while the Georgia Gifted Eligibility is completed.
Continuation Policy:
- Continuation in the SAGE Program for the gifted in the Henry County School System requires that a student maintain a satisfactory performance in the gifted program and the regular education program as noted by regular attendance, active participation, appropriate conduct and attitude for learning, completion of assignments, and acceptable academic achievement. Guidelines include maintaining a 85 average for each grading period of all academic subjects combined (Science, Social Studies, Math, Language Arts, and Reading), with no grade below 74 (“D” or “F”). When applicable, the “S” or satisfactory will be recognized.
Military Families:
- During its 2009 session, the Georgia General Assembly enacted several laws relating to the education of children of military families that impact the gifted education reciprocity of students whose households include a member of the United States uniform services. The goal of the legislation is to maximize a student's educational continuity despite the frequent movement across states and school districts. These laws are codified at O.C.G.A. 20-2-2140 through 20_2-2180. Eligible students are school-aged children whose household includes at least one of the following:
- An active duty member of the uniformed services.
- A member or veteran of the uniformed services who is severely injured and medically discharged.
- A member of the uniformed services that died on active duty or as a result of injuries sustained on active duty.
